What is Scalp Peeling, and How to Choose a Peeling for the Scalp

Peeling will not only prolong the feeling of freshness of the hair but also help get rid of dandruff, itching, and increased oiliness of the head. “RBC Style” tells how to choose the right product.

The scalp gets rid of dead cells, excess sebum, and impurities. But for many people, this function does not fully work – the hair becomes dirty too quickly, and the skin becomes itchy dandruff or excess fat. And this is where peeling comes in.

What is Scalp Peeling

A scalp peel is a cleansing treatment and cosmetic exfoliation, and it can be helpful in both healthy and problematic skin.

Peels for the scalp are of two types.

Mechanical peeling

This is a classic scrub with small granular particles that scrape off keratinized dead cells of the upper layer of the skin and other substances. As an abrasive, crystals of sugar or sea salt, charcoal, or pieces of fruit stones are usually used.

Chemical peel

It contains acids that dissolve and wash away everything superfluous from the skin. According to Anastasia Sidorova, these can be:

  • Salicylic acid (Salicylic Acid);
  • Glycolic acid (Glycolic Acid);
  • Azelaic acid (Azelaic acid);
  • Lactic acid (Lactic Acid);
  • Mandelic acid (Mandelic Acid);
  • Tartaric acid (Tartaric Acid);
  • Lactobionic acid (Lactobionic Acid);
  • Malic acid (malic acid).

Also, according to the degree of impact, peels are divided into superficial, medium, and deep. The latter, as a rule, are performed in the salon.

What is peeling for?

Peeling is needed to rid the scalp of dead skin cells, excess sebum, and substances from the external environment. One 2018 study proved that scalp peels could speed up hair growth.

Factors in which peeling is especially useful:

  • Dandruff;
  • Greasy hair;
  • Too dry skin;
  • Hair loss;
  • Itching and flaking of the scalp;
  • Dullness, insufficient hair volume.

If peeling does not help get rid of itching, flaking of the head, and dandruff, it is better to refuse it and consult a dermatologist. These phenomena can be symptoms of seborrhea, psoriasis, and dermatitis.

How often can you exfoliate

should use peels no more than once a week. Too frequent use can damage hair follicles and remove the necessary amount of sebum from the skin.

How to choose a peeling for the scalp

It is worth avoiding products with sulfates and silicone in the composition – they are harmful to the hair. It’s a good idea to buy a scrub with soothing ingredients like oats or aloe vera, which will help avoid hypersensitivity and discomfort on the skin that may appear after peeling.

For oily skin

Anastasia Sidorova says that people with oily scalp should choose to peel with components that work for sub-regulation and exhibit antifungal properties – primarily salicylic acid. Azelaic and glycolic acids also work well.
