Cushions are easy to use, and the manufacturers of such cosmetics promise perfect application and economical consumption. Cushions are for different purposes; if desired, they can make makeup inside and out. However, dermatologists warn that cushions can become a breeding ground for germs if not properly cared for and stored. This in itself is unpleasant and even dangerous for skin diseases.
What is a cushion?
A cushion is a form of decorative cosmetics in which a special aseptic sponge is impregnated with a liquid composition. It can be the foundation, blush, highlighter, and more. The main difference from cosmetics in a separate package is that the cushion combines a tube for storing the product and an applicator for applying it.
Outwardly, cushions look different, but they are always very compact. It can be a box, like a loose powder, or a stick. In the first case, the set will simultaneously contain two pads: a finely porous sponge impregnated with a tonal base and the second for application. The sponge is attached directly to the holder with liquid lipstick or shadows in the sticks. To squeeze out the product, it is enough to press the cushion to the desired area, if it is a stick, or to blot the soaked sponge with a face sponge.
What is the cushion for?
Cushions work just like any other decorative cosmetics. A cushion is needed to apply foundation, blush, bronzer, lipstick, eye shadow, and highlighter. Compared to conventional means, cushions have their pros and cons.
Pluses of cushions
Compactness. The cushion is more compact than tubes, jars, and dispensers. It does not take up much space in a cosmetic bag; it is convenient to take it on the road, including in hand luggage, without fear that the lid will accidentally open and the product will leak out.
Convenient use. For makeup, you only need a cushion. Brushes, sponges, and other tools are not required. This is convenient when cleaning up on the road or running before an important event. In addition, face-to-hand contact is minimized, which can be crucial for susceptible skin.
Light coverage. Unlike heavy foundations, cushions provide a light and airy texture. Thanks to this, several layers can be applied to the face without fear that the makeup will look overloaded.
Contains UV protection. Almost all cushions have a minimal sunscreen filter. Korean brands may offer stronger protection up to SPF 50.
Cons of cushions
Hygiene. If, during the day, you start tapping on the face with a cushion sponge, then the oils, dirt, and fat that the skin has accumulated by this time will be transferred to the main cream pad. This is not hygienic, mainly if you use the cushion often and in the heat. “After one or two uses, the sponge should be washed with soap and water to prevent bacteria from accumulating.
Consumption. Even though the cushion gives the skin as much foundation as it needs, it quickly wears off. The average volume of a jar or stick is smaller than in a standard tube.
Translucency. The consistency of the cushion foundation is almost airy. According to the makeup artist, such a composition is ideal for smooth skin without any special flaws where you must even out the complexion. However, it will be useless if more thorough coverage is required.
Limited palette. Foundation cushions have fewer shades than other classic products. In addition, the choice of cushion eyeshadows, lipsticks, or highlighters is minimal.
How to use the cushion
Since the coverage of the cushion foundation is usually relatively light, the skin must be in the best possible condition. First, you must use a mild facial cleanser and a nourishing cream. Then you can start applying.
- Press the sponge or platform with the foundation and apply it to the face with patting movements. You can immediately go to the second layer for denser coverage if desired.
- When applying cushion foundation to more complex areas – under the eyes or along the nose – fold the sponge in half or wrap it around your finger.
- To fix the result, walk with a fluffy brush with powder on the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin).
- The cushion is applied to the lips in the same way as on the face. Press the applicator to release the product, then pat it on the lips lightly for better absorption.
- Once you’ve finished applying your foundation, finish your makeup as usual. If necessary, correct the tone during the day.
Is it possible to wash the cushion?
Maria Dolgopolova says the sponge pad, which is used to apply foundation, can be washed and necessary. From this, its properties will not deteriorate. But for many brands, the sponge is made from a material similar to latex, and makeup does not wash out of it well, the expert warns. According to her, the cushion can be used as long as no deformation occurs. When the product in the cushion sponge runs out, it should be picked up and turned over. On the reverse side, as a rule, there is still enough cream left.
There are unique products with antibacterial formulas to clean cosmetic brushes and sponges. After cleaning, the instruments must be washed under warm running water, blotted with a napkin from excess moisture, and dried separately. Cases for storing brushes, a tube, or a cosmetic bag must also be washed. From improvised means for disinfecting brushes and sponges, the following are suitable:
- Micellar solution or face wash;
- Regular antibacterial soap;
- Solution of chlorhexidine bigluconate 0.05%;
- Shampoo and conditioner, with two to three drops of tea tree oil or lavender, for an antibacterial effect.
